Smart on/off with third party cover?

I had a Samsung LCD case which was great until the LCDs stopped working. Despite this, the smart screen on and off function continued to work.

I recently bought a third party case (leather with kick stand) but the smart on off doesn't work. What's the best way to achieve this with the new case please? Software? Some cheeky magnet hack?
